Row or Not to Row

This April, I started a new sport... Rowing! I was never the athletic type (sometime I would skip PE in high school to go to the library). Anyway, it has been both really fun and challenging. I forgot how hard it is to learn something totally new. It has also introduced me to some really cool people. This weekend I will be rowing in my first race! I am really excited....

Anyway, that being said, I have to decide whether I am going to keep rowing this year once school starts. I really can't decide... I won't be able to row during the evening practices because we have class, which means that I would have to row at 5:30 am. (And only on days when I am not going to Wayne Memorial High School, because I have to be there even before practice is over). In addition, it is a pretty big time commitment and I am not really what one would call a morning person.... However, rowing does make me feel really good and energized, which would be a reason to give it a try. Yet I don't want to be over committed, with school and boyfriend and friends and dog and rowing, oh yeah and sleeping!

Well, I guess I don't have to decide for a month... so we will see!

Good luck on the rowing! What a fun sport. If I wasn't so miserable in the early morning, I probably would have tried out for my college team (all my suite mates were rowers).

Rowing's cool, Autumn! You just mentioned it during lunch (come back to 1228...where'd you go?) and I wondered why.
I used to swim at 6a.m., and I still feel nostalgic for those days...

I think that it will be really beautiful and inspiring out early, especially once the summer is drawing to a close and you begin to feel the fall crispness in the air and in the slant of the sunlight drawing closer. My bet, if you get enough sleep that is, is that you will be happy and inspired every time you make the effort and get out there on the water. Go for it!

Hmmmmm, that is a tough decision. It seems that you do really enjoy rowing, and it's definitely a good way to squeeze in exercise and regain some lost energy! But the fall semester does seem a little bit scary, from what I hear, and rowing may turn out to be more of a chore than a fun activity. I would say maybe try it out for a week or two, and then make a decision. You may decide that it's something you definitely want to keep up with, or that it's just too much to handle with the crazy SMAC! I don't know, I say go for it and see what happens:)

I had to take a break from outrigger canoe paddling for the six weeks of my program. Luckily, I was able to surf on the weekends and hit the gym during our lunch breaks. It was so important to have that time in the water to help me energize and refocus for all the reading and writing and thinking. Stick with it:)

I did not know you would be at WMHS! Who will you be working with there?

On the rowing front, I know some people who got through SMAC by having a SMAC-free hobby they could do, so it is an option if that's what works for you.
